In my story, I chose to learn about the math and department. I chose to interview Mr. James who teaches A.P stats and geometry. Mr. James and other math teachers are looking forward to many things this year like A.C.T boot camp, Placement tests for incoming freshmen, etc. Mr. James is looking forward to many things internally like the new teachers bringing juice to the department and non-public outreach events.
We also talked about some stuff he’s been doing this year in his math classes. In his geometry class, they have been looking at some ancient math and mathematicians, using rulers, protractors, and compasses to construct shapes, and they will eventually work their way to trigonometry. In A.P. stats they just try to consume as much math as they can during the school year.
He likes to use code to develop new activities and problems to keep things interesting every year. It’s his first year ever having 75% female students in his advanced classes which he thinks is really good in getting women into S.T.E.M. In the math department there are always looking forward to the new faces that help the department grow. I asked him one last question about why students should take math. His answer was “you have to”.
