Let’s talk about the show that has been taking over the entertainment world this fall. I am of course talking about Beckham, the series that premiered on Netflix on October 3 and was the number one watched show on Netflix for three consecutive weeks in October. The show amassed 11.6 million views in two weeks from just the U.S. alone and is considered one of the best Netflix series in years.
Beckham is a four part documentary series that reflects on English soccer legend David Beckahm’s career and the hardships of being a professional athlete. Throughout the series directors talk to Beckham himself, his wife Victoria, Beckham’s coaches, teammates etc. to get each of their perspective for the series. The reason why this show was so successful was because it was relatable and honest, while being emotionally captivating for the audience. I talked with viewer Tahj Cole who is a Sophomore at Judge to get his thoughts.
“The Beckham series was a fantastic show, I recommend it to everyone even if you’re not a soccer fan, It goes through the life of an athlete outside the sport.”
This quote from Tahj is spot on about the series and I agree with it. If your concern is that you’re not a soccer fan and won’t like the show, that’s not true. The series explores Beckham’s life off the field and the mental challenges that top athletes go through trying to meet expectations for their team, fans, and country.
