I got the chance to see Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese’s latest film. While leaving the theaters I couldn’t help but feel indifferent towards the film.
The Non-fiction film based on the Killers of the Flower Moon novel takes place on Osage land in Oklahoma in the 1920’s. Starring actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Robert De Niro, and Jesse Plemons the movie follows the story of the Osage tribe of Native Americans who have settled in Oklahoma. The land that the Osage tribe lives on is found out to have massive amounts of oil all throughout it. Because of this the Osage tribe became some of the richest people in the country. Lot’s of white businessmen begin to move to the area, and are not pleased that the Osage tribe are making all this money off of the oil.
The story then follows Ernest Burkhart played by Leonardo DiCaprio who has just moved to the Osage area and is living with his uncle William Hale. As a white man trying to make some money as a personal driver he begins to develop a relationship with a Osage woman named Mollie Kyle. Their love for each other deepens and they eventually get married. Shortly after this, murders of people from the Osage tribe begin to take place, and raises the question of who is responsible and why?
I feel that this film had great moments of action, suspense, and great acting performances especially from Lily Gladstone as Mollie Kyle. Although there were points of heavy dialogue and time jumps throughout the movie’s three and half hour run time, that left me disinterested and confused about what was going on. Overall despite my mixed feelings on the film I would recommend everyone to give it a watch, as there is a gripping story with a very impactful message to learn from Killers of the Flower Moon.
