Disney’s newest animated film, “Wish, was announced in September of 2022 at the D23 expo and was ultimately released on Nov. 22, 2023. It seeks to pay tribute to preceding films during the 100th anniversary celebration of The Walt Disney Company.
The movie is set in the fictional kingdom of Rosas and follows the journey of protagonist Asha as she discovers the truth about Rosas and its king, Magnifico.
The film itself is unique stylistically in that it is animated in a mix of 2D and 3D. This breaks Disney’s trend of using exclusively 3D animation since the strictly 2D animation of 2011’s “Winnie the Pooh.”
Voice credits include well-known actors and actresses like Ariana DeBose, Chris Pine, and Alan Tudyk, but the film itself lacks creativity and originality in both plot and theme, as it seems like a combination of the wildly successful “Encanto,” and the original Disney classics.
Certain aspects of the plot bring some fresh ideas and originality, but it is ultimately not enough to make the film extremely memorable.
Tributes to former films are hidden throughout “Wish” and provide a blast to the past that may delight some viewers. The soundtrack is distinctly similar to “Encanto,” with mostly pop undertones. The soundtrack combined with an impressive list of actors builds the framework for an entertaining Disney tribute film, but it does not live up to the likes of the ever-popular “Moana,” “Frozen,” and “Tangled.”
“Wish” is overall a decent shot at a modern classic, but it is certainly not the “story a century in the making” that was promised.
