In 2021, Invincible took the world by storm, now two and a half years later Invincible season 2 is finally back and very similar to its comic book counterpart a little rough around the edges as it adjusts to the major status quo change. Invincible is about 18-year-old Mark Grayson (voiced by Stephen Yuhn) who gets superpowers very similar to his father, the superhero known as Omni Man (voiced by JK Simmons). Along the way he makes a bunch of new allies and enemies. However, this is just the basic premise for the show, and this is really not what it is about.
I think everything that the show has adapted from the comic it has made better. In the first episode of the show, it introduces the character Angstrom Levy (voiced by Sterling K. Brown) who is vastly superior to his comics counterpart, and they make him someone you can actually root for. Mark’s mom Debbie Grayson (voiced by Sandrah Oh) is also heavily elevated making her a standout as she has to deal with a major loss that happens to her at the end of the first season.
The absolutely brutal nature of the show is also back, and you can see the consequences every fight has on civilians helping it to stand out from a lot of other superhero media. This season also brings the multiverse into the fold which has been very overdone recently, but it does it very differently from everything else partly because it doesn’t need to rely on endless cameos because Invincible is a new thing and because it is adapting a story that was written 20 years ago that wasn’t just following the multiverse trend.
For me I think each individual piece of this puzzle is executed very well and a lot of points perfectly, but I think the problems begin to arise once all of the pieces are put together. This season is very weirdly structured and that can especially be seen in episodes 2 and 3. Both of these episodes feel like there is way too much happening but in the end it leaves it feeling empty because not enough time is dedicated to each plot.
However, I think episode 4 of season 2 is probably the second-best episode of the entire series right now and is pretty perfect and I am so excited to see what is next. I am going to give Invincible Season 2 Part 1 a 7/10 without bias and an A- with my personal love for the show and its source material included.
