After exceeding 80 inches for the first time in 27 years last year, Salt Lake is in a snow lull.
This season, only 4.2 inches have fallen on the capital city. Salt Lake typically averages more than 30 inches fallen at this time of year, according to the ABC 4 Utah. Things are looking up, however: tonight, there is a 60% chance of rain-snow, or sleet. This is followed by a 40% chance of snow tomorrow and a 60% chance on friday.
More snow will drive out the smog that carries in our valley while duly helping to build our snowmelt for the summer. This will help fill the Great Salt Lake, water our crops, and fill our thirst.
But Utah still worries: less overall snow still brings the chance for a longer and harder drought. With a current population explosion and a looming water shortage crisis, this existential threat may soon become a reality.
