Coach Smith started teaching at Judge Memorial Catholic High School almost 10 years ago. Some of her students found out she played and coached ultimate frisbee. They asked her to coach Judge ultimate frisbee, “I really have a hard time saying no whenever someone asks me to coach,” Coach Smith says in the interview.
Coach Smith played high school basketball and track. She didn’t want to do that when she got to college. She was trying different things out. Her college buddies in her dorm invited her to play ultimate frisbee and she loved it.
One of her goals this season is to get people interested in the sport and get them to want to keep playing. “It’s a lifetime sport,” she says. Coach Smith mentions she knows people in their sixties who are still playing ultimate frisbee and are playing in community leagues. She hopes her players make it to college ultimate frisbee. She expresses that if you were to find a smaller group, like Judge Memorial, it helps you settle in more and find a comfort place.
“I think ultimate is the best because of the spirit of the game,” she says. It’s the concept of playing your hardest while still being sportsmanlike, kind, and thoughtful.
Coach Smith has coached ultimate frisbee for about 12-13 years in different levels of skill. She’s helped with some of the pro teams in Salt Lake City and coached middle school and high school. She then expresses how ultimate can help with different sports like football, soccer, basketball, and other sports of that nature.
