The new year brings a new club to the Judge community. The Judge Book Club had their first meeting in early September.
Ms. Buyers is the moderator, and the club leaders are Scarlett Nunez, Anna Smith, and Sophia Tomczack. So far, the book club has had a first meeting, in which they picked September’s book, and an October meeting in which they discussed the previous month’s book. The club leaders have also made posters to hang around the school.
This club was started because students enjoyed DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read) and wanted more opportunities to read and discuss books with fellow students. A group of students, Nunez, Smith, and Tomczack, were trying to find time in class to discuss books they were reading outside of school. With limited class time, they decided to start the book club to be able to do just that with students from all grades.
Each month’s book will be chosen from a different genre, and with Halloween approaching, mystery was this past month’s genre. “Hallowe’en Party” by Agatha Christie was chosen with a popular vote from club members. In the future, student leaders will choose several options for each month’s book, and club members will vote on their favorites.
The club meets once a month in Buyers’ room, room 320. The date of each meeting will be chosen at the prior month’s meeting. The next meeting will take place on Thursday, Nov. 2, and the book will be “Circe” by Madeline Miller. Students interested in becoming part of the book club should simply show up! There will be flyers in the hallway each month showing each month’s book.
