On August 26, 2023 Judge Memorial’s Black Student Union hosted “Black to School Night.” Black students across the valley were able to experience a night for them and their identity. This event was filled with black-owned businesses, performances, and an African food truck.
Judge Memorial’s own Moneywayrich, a current junior, performed five original songs including “Milano,” “Baby,” and “Hood Poetry.” Judge students raved with excitement seeing their own local talent take over a stage with his first-ever live performance. Rapper Prettyboi, a 2019 Judge Memorial graduate, alongside Snicks wanted to uplift and raise awareness in the Utah community in the form of music. Fashion brand Akuamrada also utilized students at the event to actively model their clothing. Sarah Daw, Shushu Mayar, and Jojoe all performed graceful poetry recitations. Shushu and Sarah, both 2023 Judge graduates, and last year’s BSU officers were excited to participate and see the work of the BSU continuing.
Multiple black-owned businesses were in attendance. Local hair braiders, Bilo Hair and Exquisite hair promoted their skills. Art brand BLKMatter, run by University of Utah student Willow Blythe displayed her works. Safari Beauty Supply, Flo, and Tumani Arts Africa showcased their African jewelry and clothing. The Sudanese basketball organization, South Sudan Elite, was also in attendance. Streetwear brand L’Amoure Ferre’s owner Iggy Amoure gave a message to all students in attendance to work hard and follow their dreams.
One of the night’s biggest hits was the food. Eats Bakery sold amazing in-house made cinnamon rolls. Namash Swahili Cuisine’s food truck, sold multiple plates of meals and drinks ranging from Mango Lasi, samosas, and butter chicken.
Judge Memorial’s Black Student Union officers are grateful for all who participated and cannot wait for this year full of events.
