Big news in the golf world at Judge is the boys golf team’s region championship last week. I interviewed sophomore Matt Evans about the team’s performance and his overall experience at regions. Regions was held at Meadowbrook golf course where Judge tied their opponent, Juan Diego. According to Evans, both sides took home a trophy.
The team had a pretty specific practice plan going into regions to prepare for the course and the competition. “We just did a lot of playing, we didn’t do as much [practice on the driving] range and we decided to go out and play on the course to get ready for course management,” Evans said. In golf, course management is the ability to make smart decisions and shots that suit the condition of the course and the player’s own ability level. This was an important area of focus for the team.
While Evans wasn’t satisfied with his personal performance, he said “as a whole, the team did really well. Juan Diego had some kids that showed up but our top four on our team definitely showed up and came to play.” This marks the second time in four years that boys golf has won regions, the last one being in 2019.
So what’s next for the golf team? They’ll make an appearance at the state tournament over Oct. 11-12, also at Meadowbrook. So if you see someone from the team, be sure to give them some support ahead of state next week.
