1929: Name of school changes
Helen Wicker remembers when the official name changed from Cathedral School to Judge Memorial School

Helen Wicker was born and raised in Park City. But after she graduated the 7th grade her family moved down to Salt Lake so she could attend a Catholic high school. Half way through Helens senior year, the name changed from Cathedral High school to Judge Memorial. “At first we were upset,” Helen recalled, “but then we realized why it was changed, and it was all right.”
She remembered Fr.Keefe and how nice a person he was. She also remembered that the classes were held in big round rooms and that the boys said “they teach us in a round room so the devil can’t corner us.”
She also had some funny stories. For example, once some boys in her class snuck into the school one night with some farm animals and let them loose on the floor below the one that the nuns lived on. The nuns were very upset about this because they were too scared to go down and check until the next day.
When she wasn’t in school, she would go to movies and to football games. She said there weren’t a lot of things to do back then, but every once in awhile the school held dances.
Helen believes that Judge is one of the main reasons she was able to get so many good jobs in her life. She said it always helped on a resume. The advice she had for today’s Judge student is to take advantage of what’s being taught and to be glad that you are getting a Catholic education.
