As Judge Memorial Catholic High School starts the 2023-2024 school year, a new season of sports full of new players, coaches, and victories commences. Judge has already had success in the new season, as girls tennis, girls soccer, and boys football have all had their respective achievements.
Girls tennis is on track to have one of their best seasons in recent years, winning all four games of their region play so far. Since losing to Rowland Hall and Grantsville in hard fought matches, the team has now won eight games in a row, losing just two of the last twenty matches the team has competed in. Senior Audrey Selfridge, a returning player on the team has led the team with her performances, earning three of the five “Player of the Game” awards given out so far this season. With the recent play of Audrey Selfridge and junior Willmarth, alongside the established coaching of Tracey Valentine and Tony Lew, the team is on track to perform extremely well in the upcoming regional tournaments on September 25th and 26th.
Judge girls soccer is also having a great season, now ranked second in the 3A Region. Like girls tennis, the soccer team is only improving, scoring 25 unanswered goals in their last two outings. The team boasted a dominating 17-0 win against Summit Academy on September 7th, and another commanding 8-0 victory against Providence Hall on the 12th. The team is chock full of experienced players, with six returning varsity players that are now seniors. The sister duo of senior Addie Wikstrom and her sister, freshman Lily Wikstrom, have helped the team out tremendously, with Lily leading in goals per game and Addie leading in assists per game. The duo has collectively put up 9 goals and 5 assists in just the last two games. The team had an important and tough matchup against Juan Diego on September 19th, a team they barely lost to 3-2 in a game just two weeks ago.
The Judge Memorial boys football team has had a challenging schedule, playing teams like South Summit, Emery, and San Juan. Although the record might not show it, the team has promise. The Bulldogs took on San Juan on the 8th, a team that went undefeated last year and is let to lose a game this season. Even though San Juan dominated the game, the Judge team showed promise in the first quarter, scoring the first touchdown of the game and forcing a fumble on the very next drive. Upcoming the team has some easier matches, giving the Bulldogs opportunity to piece together that promise in time for the playoffs. Led by a strong core of experienced seniors that have shown they can play at a high level, the Judge football team is not to be ignored in this year’s playoffs.
