This year for Judge’s annual Christ the King service day, Mr. Derick Harris’s discernment class helped out the Gail Miller Resource Center. The center is an emergency shelter that serves up to 200 men and women nightly, with no prerequisites for service. Guests receive crisis services such as a bed, three daily meals, showers, blankets, clothing, laundry, and connection to critical community resources to find a permanent, stable home.
We showed up at the Cube Smart location in South Salt Lake and helped reorganize the big storage units that the center uses to store resources for their clients. The work was hard, but well worth it when it was explained the impact we were going to have on people’s lives.
The woman who we helped named Olivia, was beyond grateful for the extra hands in completing such a big task. When interviewed she was eager to express the need for acts of service such as these especially for their clients.
With winter starting soon the time is now or never to get these things done and prepare to help all of those who need it in the colder months. By the end of the five hours all of the students in Mr. Harris’ discernment class were made much closer and gained a greater appreciation for human struggle.
