Salt Lake City’s “9th and 9th” has some of the best locally owned coffee shops in the valley. This ranking highlights the top spots based on drink quality, atmosphere, and convenience. While each café has something to offer, some stand out more than others.
Java Jo’s
Java Jo’s is the best coffee shop in the 9th and 9th district of Salt Lake City. In my opinion, it serves the most reliable lattes in the valley. You can’t go wrong with a vanilla latte or chai from this spot. The customer service is always friendly, and the drive-thru is quick, usually taking less than 10 minutes. Because of its great drinks, convenience, and welcoming atmosphere, I consider Java Jo’s the best coffee shop in the area.
Coffee Garden
Coffee Garden is one of the best study spots in Salt Lake City, and it also serves excellent coffee. The shop has a unique, indie vibe that helps you focus and get work done. Along with great coffee and tea, they offer delicious pastries and desserts. I rank Coffee Garden second because of its cozy atmosphere and quality drinks and food.
Caffe Expresso
Caffe Expresso is another good option for coffee in Salt Lake City. Located next to “The Whale,” it’s a convenient drive-thru spot. They make a solid latte and hot chocolate, but the long wait times can be a downside. While it’s not my favorite, I appreciate that it’s a small business with quality drinks, so I placed it third on my list.
Publik Coffee Roasters
Publik is best known for its food rather than its coffee. Their avocado toast, paired with a brown sugar latte, is a great combination. The 9th and 9th location has a modern, stylish feel with a nice bar area and wallpaper. I ranked Publik fourth because I see it more as a brunch spot than a go-to coffee shop.
Starbucks (In Smiths)
Starbucks is my least favorite cafe on this list. Obviously they are a huge chain and probably the most well known coffee in the world, which can be a good thing, but also takes away the “personality” of a cafe. I put this at the end of my list because it is probably my last choice when it comes to getting a coffee on the 9th and 9th, due to the fact that the location is difficult because it is in a Smiths and Starbucks coffee doesn’t have as much flavor as the other local businesses on this list.
