On February 28 the Utah state legislature passed a bill called H.B 84 which would put a “school guardian” into schools.
This school guardian would either be a teacher or a hired staff member that would carry a gun ready at any moment to stop a shooting before it ever happens. This bill would also put a panic button into all public schools as well as start working with Safe U.T more. They are also hoping to update this bill to put it into private and charter schools as well.
Currently 31 states have bills like this in place and allow teachers to concealed carry at school or have armed security in schools ready at any moment for something like this to happen.
People are very divided on teachers or security being armed in schools. BDP staff member, Owen Prince, and I share are opinions on it in this video.
There have been 404 school shootings since Columbine in 1999 and there are definitely going to be more shootings in the future.
I talked to both Senator Don Ipson, co-sponsor of HB84 as well as Judge’s Dean Douglas about their feelings on these bills.
There are many different feelings on how shootings should be handled in the future and it is a topic that is very important to Americans as wells as Utahns and even Judge Students right now.
