Last summer, Judge tragically lost one of its most outgoing and loved students. Nuer Deng, known by students and teachers as Nudy, was shot and killed in West Valley City. This news came as a shock to everyone at Judge and has left the student body and teachers picking up the pieces. Sophia Lyon, a senior at Judge and member of the Student Council (StuCo), said that “Nudy’s death was definitely just a shock to everybody… it puts into perspective for a lot of people just how fragile life is”. She also mentioned how StuCo has focused a lot on celebrating Nudy’s life and memorializing him through school events.
One way that the Student Council at Judge made a point of memorializing Nudy was a blue-out football game when Judge played L.C.A. on September 27th. Blue was Nudy’s favorite color.
According to Lyon, at the beginning of the year student government had a “meeting focused mainly on how to memorialize him this year” and that they decided a Nudy Night blue out game could “get the whole student body involved”.
On Nudy Night, fans participated in a moment of silence to honor Nudy and released blue balloons in his honor. StuCo also made sure to incorporate blue into as many things as possible at the game. Additionally, the concessions stand sold Nudy’s favorite snacks and his favorite music was played at halftime.
Lyon said that she and the other members of StuCo “worked with his family and all the ideas that they had for the night to make sure that it would have gone the way he wanted it to”.
It’s safe to say that Nudy Night was a huge success thanks to the effort put in by StuCo.
