Teacher Appreciation Week at Judge Memorial Catholic High School is more than posters, treats or thank you cards. For many students, it is a way to show appreciation to the relationships that make the school feel like a community rather than just a place to learn and attend classes.
Students across Judge describe their teachers as supportive, understanding, engaging and genuinely invested in their success both inside and outsi de the classroom. While many teachers are known for pushing students academically, students say that the encouragement and care behind those expectations are what help make that difference. Teachers challenge students to work harder while also creating environments where a student may feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and learning to grow.
Many students talked about teachers who go beyond what is expected of them. Mrs. Smith stays after school every day to help students with math and Dr. Macknight hosts office hours every morning to make sure students can get extra support before class begins. Mrs. Brand works closely with the student council and dedicates time outside the classroom to helping students build a stronger school community. Students also mentioned Mr. Trentman’s humor and care for his classes, saying he creates an atmosphere that makes learning about religion fun.
Other teachers were recognized for the way they make students feel seen and respected. Students shared that Mrs. Buyers create a classroom where everyone feels heard and safe expressing themselves. Dr. Sloan was repeatedly described as someone who recognizes each student as an individual, makes them feel heard and gives them the opportunity to succeed. Even in challenging courses, teachers like Dr. Gibbons are able to keep students engaged through humor and personality. Teachers like Mr. Ring, Mr. Dunn, Mr. Laufer, and Mrs. Keller was also mentioned for creating welcoming classrooms where students feel comfortable being themselves.
There are so many more teachers and staff at Judge that are even not mentioned, but they truly all have such a big impact on Judge students.
What stood out most among students wasn’t just the quality of teaching, but the effort Judge teachers make to build connections. Many are involved in clubs, activities, athletics, student leadership, and events throughout the school. Their involvement allows relationships with students to go far beyond academics, creating a stronger sense of trust and community throughout the school.
Personally, I think the best teachers are the ones who listen, care, and act. They notice when students are struggling, celebrate their accomplishments, and make classrooms feel both productive and welcoming. Teacher Appreciation Week serves as a reminder that the impact of a teacher is more than a lesson plan or assignment. For many students, their teachers not only help shape their education, but also their confidence, motivation, and sense of belonging.
