After winning the school Poetry Out Loud competition, senior Cecilia Tucker won the regional competition held at the Marmalade Library. On March 4 she advanced to the POL state finals, held at the Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center in Taylorsville.
Cecilia recited “Chicago” by Carl Sandburg, “Songs for the People” by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, and “The Protected Sex” by Alice Duer Miller.
Cecilia was awarded an honorable mention and received a $100 check from the Utah Division of Arts and Museums.
The first place winner was James Ware from Olympus who recited “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert frost, “Chicago” by Carl Sandburg, and “Blues Fantasy” by Langston Hughes. Second place went was Ivy Jensen of Maeser Prep who recited “My Grandmother’s Love Letters” By Hart Crane, “Why We Oppose Pockets for Women” by Alice Duer Miller, and “The Fish” by Marianne Moore.
