U.S. Congressional District 1, a newly configured congressional district is coming to Utah in 2026 following a court case that was amended in November of 2025. This district features parts of northern Utah and also a smaller section of Salt Lake City. This new district is predicted to be voted as a democratic seat, giving democrats some long awaited representation in the state of Utah.
Within this new congressional seat, there is an up and coming politician, Liban Mohamed, who is trying to become one of the youngest people ever to be elected into congress. Mohamed grew up in Logan and Ogden, so he feels he has a great understanding and feel for the area.
He has also lived in New York, where he worked for Meta, and also D.C. where he worked in government relations for TikTok. He said a large part of his job working for TikTok was dealing with the possible ban of the app in the United States.
He has a vast understanding of how congress works and confidently believes that he would be a good fit. Mohamed is very excited for this new district specifically because it can give some people a new voice in the state of Utah.
“I think it’s an opportunity for voices that haven’t had much an opportunity,” he said, “particularly the ones on the west side of salt Lake County to be heard and get the representation they deserve.”
There are many issues in Utah that Mohamed cares about, from housing affordability to healthcare for all. But one that he talked to me about, which I found particularly interesting, was young people being able to get jobs.
“It is so difficult just to think about how you’re going to navigate the next steps of life, even if you do everything the right way.”
This absolutely means something to us as we develop through the stages of our young lives. From high school we go to college, and then to the real world, and there is no way of knowing what could happen
Liban Mohamed is one of the most popular candidates in the state of Utah. The primary election is in July. The general election is in November. So no matter who you are voting for go out and vote, hopefully for LIban Mohamed.
